SIGNPOSTS - EDITED BY PRABAL KUMAR BASU
Punjab and Bengal were the two states which bore the brunt of partition in India at the time of independence. Both were geographically severed, which had an effect on the socio-economic evolution of these two states. Bengal had to witness another significant turmoil due to the influx of refugees of a particular religion, when Bangladesh was born in 1971 primarily on the basis of language. Yet another significant feature of post-Independent West Bengal had been the wide dissemination of leftist ideas that later in the sixties took a more radical direction in the Naxalite movement, which had far reaching consequences politically and on the social milieu too.
This anthology has endeavored to document the social, political and socio-economic evolution in the post-independence years and its impact on Bengali poetry.
Though it is believed that original poetry gets significantly lost in translation, but to take it to the wider section of non Bengali readers attempts have been made here not to deviate from the original. Every poet has an articulation of his / her own and that is what needs to be retained in translation. All measures have been taken to ensure that.
Art and poetry are complimentary. Poets and painters explore the same imagery. That is yet another dimension of Bengali poetry that has been underscored in this anthology with a selection of representative works projecting the spirit of times, produced by some of the finest contemporary painters.

LOVE : A GHOST STORY - Vibhuti Narain Rai
Translated from the Hindi - Satya Chaitanya
It's a mystic love story that takes place in the colonial India of early twentieth century. The author has immaculately blended realism with supernaturalism for a story that grips you with its pathos and surreal effect. It is a novel of true love, courage and honour centred on the murder of an English chemist in Mussoorie. The murder takes place in the year in which electricity comes to the fledgeling English settlement, for the first time. In the novel, fascinating night scenes of long-forgotten youthful romance under a horse chestnut tree come alive as a journalist of today probes into the mystery surrounding the hanging of a young soldier in love with a beautiful, lonely girl growing up steeped in Indian mountain myths. Love: A Ghost Story is a story of love that refuses to die and of honour and chooses death over the betrayal of trust. Courage has many faces – here you come across what is perhaps the noblest.
